Urgent: Manipur Governor Earnestly Discusses Alarming State Situation with HM Amit Shah
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss the current situation in the unrest-stricken state. In Bhalla’s first visit to the national capital since assuming the gubernatorial role on January 3, he also met with President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. The specifics of the discussions with the Home Minister were not disclosed by officials.
Upon taking office, Governor Bhalla visited Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, urging civil society leaders to collaborate with the administration in peace-building. He toured various relief camps occupied by those displaced since the ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. As a former Union Home Secretary, Bhalla also visited Moreh town on the India-Myanmar border to assess the Integrated Check Post’s operations and ongoing border fencing tasks. The Land Ports Authority of India’s officials briefed him on cross-border trade operations.
During his Moreh visit, Bhalla engaged with civil society leaders to address their concerns, including representatives from the Border Trade Chamber of Commerce, the Tamil Sangam, the Manipur Muslim Council, and the Gurkha Samaj. Efforts to secure the 1,643 km India-Myanmar border, notorious for smuggling, are progressing rapidly under the Border Roads Organisation, with a projected cost of Rs 31,000 crore.
Parallelly, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), representing 13 organizations from the Kuki-Zo tribal community, alongside 10 tribal MLAs, has been advocating for a separate administration akin to a Union Territory for their areas. A KZC delegation recently held discussions with senior Ministry of Home Affairs officials in Delhi. The ethnic clashes between Kuki-Zo tribals and non-tribal Meitei people since May 2023 have resulted in at least 250 deaths, over a thousand injuries, and the displacement of more than 60,000 individuals who are residing in relief camps across various districts.
