Chümoukedima Meeting: NPGs’ Inspiring Pledge to Unite on Common Ground | Morung Express
On January 14, a significant meeting took place in Chümoukedima involving representatives from various Naga Political Groups (NPGs) and the Forum for Naga Reconciliation. This meeting marked a decisive step towards unity and reconciliation among the groups, as they collectively agreed to implement the Council of Naga Cooperation and Relationship. The Forum, led by Convenor Rev Dr. Wati Aier, facilitated discussions to find constructive solutions to the ongoing political impasse.
The representatives signed a joint statement titled the “January 14, 2025 Treatise,” acknowledging past failures and pledging commitment to their collective goals. They admitted to shortcomings in pursuing Naga aspirations, recognizing the need for accountability and vigilance to avoid past mistakes. The Treatise reiterated their dedication to the 2009 Covenant of Reconciliation and their respect for historical and political rights, including the Naga Memorandum to the Simon Commission in 1929 and other foundational documents.
The meeting underscored the importance of safeguarding Naga ancestral territories and emphasized the need for solidarity in protecting their inalienable rights across artificial boundaries. A key outcome was the agreement to establish the Council of Naga Cooperation and Relationship, a mechanism intended to promote unity and cooperation among NPGs.
In a sincere invitation, the representatives called on all Naga political groups and the public to join this process. They encouraged broader participation to ensure progress towards reconciliation and collective action.
Signatories to this crucial joint statement include leading figures from several key Naga groups, representing the NNC/FGN, NSCN/GPRN, and others. This development represents a hopeful stride toward resolving longstanding divisions and conflicts, fostering a future of unity and collective progress for the Naga people.
