PM Modi Triumphantly Unveils Life-Changing Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg with Nitin Gadkari and Omar Abdullah
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, on January 13, 2025, emphasizing its role in enhancing connectivity and boosting tourism. While he did not specify a timeline for restoring J&K’s statehood, Modi highlighted the completion of numerous infrastructure projects aimed at integrating the region more closely with Delhi. The 6.5-kilometer tunnel, built at a cost of ₹2,700 crore, makes Sonamarg accessible year-round and is expected to significantly increase tourist footfall.
PM Modi acknowledged the sacrifices of workers who braved harsh conditions, mentioning a militant attack in October 2024 that claimed the lives of seven workers. He affirmed that new infrastructure projects, including the Z-Morh and upcoming Zojila tunnels, will ease travel and improve the quality of life for locals, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Describing J&K as a hub for advanced engineering projects, Modi cited ongoing developments like the Chenab bridge and various national highways, which are part of a ₹42,000-crore investment in connectivity.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterated the demand for statehood, acknowledging PM Modi’s commitment to past promises, including holding free and fair assembly elections. Modi responded that his promises would be fulfilled at the appropriate time. J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari praised the progress and development brought by the improved infrastructure, noting that the region is transitioning from terrorism to tourism. With these developments, Jammu and Kashmir is poised to experience a new era of prosperity and accessibility.
