Devajit Saikia Vows to Honor Jay Shah’s Legacy: A Bold New Era for BCCI Leadership
Devajit Saikia, a former first-class cricketer and seasoned cricket administrator, has been appointed as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He takes over from Jay Shah, who now holds the position of Chairman at the International Cricket Council (ICC). Saikia has expressed his gratitude towards his colleagues and praised Jay Shah for his significant contributions as BCCI Secretary. “I am extremely delighted and grateful to all my colleagues. I thank the ICC Chairman and former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. I will carry forward the remarkable work done by him,” Saikia stated during his inaugural media interaction following his appointment.
Saikia’s role as Secretary was confirmed during the BCCI’s Special General Meeting (SGM) held on Sunday, where Prabhtej Singh Bhatia was also elected as the new Treasurer of the Indian Cricket Board. The announcements were made by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla, who highlighted these key administrative changes.
With a deep-rooted background in cricket, Saikia played for Assam in the 1990-91 season, accumulating 53 runs in four matches. He has also served in significant administrative capacities, previously acting as Joint Secretary of the BCCI and Secretary of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA). Following Jay Shah’s transition to the ICC, Saikia served as the interim Secretary of the BCCI, before being officially elected to the position.
Saikia’s extensive experience in cricket both on and off the field is expected to bring valuable insight and leadership to his new role at the BCCI, as he pledges to build upon the legacy of his predecessor.
