In an alarming case emerging from Tripura, IAS officer K. Pradip Krishnaraj has been accused of physically assaulting his wife, Dr. M.J. Difi, a medical professional from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The incident reportedly revolves around unfulfilled dowry demands, setting a troubling precedent in the state. Dr. Difi, after enduring alleged physical and sexual abuse, took a firm stand by filing complaints with the Kerala court and the state women’s commission, highlighting her struggle for justice amidst a backdrop of system inaction.
Krishnaraj, currently serving as the Additional District Magistrate in Belonia, wed Dr. Difi in March 2022 in Tamil Nadu. The marriage initially seemed harmonious, but soon, demands for further dowry from Krishnaraj and his family began, despite substantial dowry already provided. Dr. Difi’s ordeal reached a harrowing peak on January 8th, when an attempt to enter her husband’s official quarters in Belonia with her father, Manikandan, resulted in a violent altercation. The confrontation reportedly led to Dr. Difi suffering a fractured left hand at the hands of her husband.
Despite seeking redress with the Belonia police, her complaint was allegedly dismissed due to the officer’s influential position. The lack of action against Krishnaraj persisted even after Dr. Difi approached the state women’s commission, prompting her to consider escalating her complaint to the National Commission for Women. Reports reveal that Dr. Difi received preliminary medical attention at Belonia Hospital before seeking improved care at GBP Hospital in Agartala.
The distressing case, involving significant allegations against a high-ranking official, highlights systemic failures in addressing domestic abuse complaints and raises pressing questions about institutional accountability in Tripura. The accused, ADM K. Pradip Krishnaraj, could not be reached for comment.
