Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin asserted that the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) would have been abolished if the INDIA alliance had assumed power at the central level, emphasizing that only the Union Government possesses the authority to annul the test. Speaking in the Assembly, Stalin underscored his party, DMK’s, longstanding opposition to NEET, which is part of their concerted efforts to scrap the examination. He remarked that NEET was not a part of Tamil Nadu’s education system when former leaders like Kalaignar (M. Karunanidhi) and J. Jayalalithaa were in power, indicating that it was introduced during the AIADMK regime, led by the Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
Responding to Palaniswami’s criticism that the ruling government has failed to deliver on its electoral promise to abolish NEET, Stalin questioned whether the opposition leader was aware that only the central government could rescind the test. He pointed out Palaniswami’s silence for nearly a year during his tenure as chief minister when NEET was implemented by the central government. Stalin contended that, had the INDIA alliance governed nationally, NEET would have been annulled, highlighting the substantial limitations faced by the state government on this issue.
Palaniswami had accused Stalin of double standards, asserting that he promised the abolition of NEET before elections but did not pursue it post-election.
