APSHRC Urges Immediate Action: Assess Downstream Impacts of Ranganadi Hydro Project for a Safer Future
ITANAGAR, 10 Jan: Acting on a concerning report about the Ranganadi River turning turbid and associated mass fish deaths, the Arunachal Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance of the environmental and public health implications. Published initially in this daily, the alarming conditions are reportedly linked to the operations of the 405 MW Ranganadi Hydroelectric Project. In response, the APSHRC has instructed the deputy commissioners of Keyi Panyor and Papum Pare districts to perform a joint assessment focusing on the downstream communities affected by the project.
The commission highlighted that these troubling events occur primarily during dam maintenance activities, resulting in significant ecological damage, health complications, and disruption of local livelihoods. It expressed concerns over the severe degradation of the river environment, the insufficient mitigation measures in place during dam operations, and the lack of sustainable solutions that reconcile developmental goals with ecological conservation.
Additionally, the APSHRC has mandated the chief general manager of the North East Electric Power Corporation, Yazali, to investigate these matters and submit a detailed action taken report within four weeks. This development underscores the need for balancing technological advancement with ecological integrity to safeguard community health and livelihood.
In related developments, the Chief Minister has criticized anti-dam activists, accusing them of spreading misinformation regarding the project. As this issue unfolds, the state authorities are keen to address both the developmental needs and environmental concerns raised by the affected communities.
