Groundbreaking Assam Cabinet Meeting: Discover the Bold Decisions by Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a pivotal Cabinet meeting on January 10, where several decisions were made to drive the state’s developmental agenda forward. A significant move was the restructuring of the Directorate of Town and Country Planning to address contemporary urban challenges like urban flooding. This includes the approval of two new Joint Director positions and 46 other specialized roles such as GIS Experts and Specialist Architects.
In a bid to revolutionize the dairy sector, the Cabinet approved the establishment of two milk processing plants in Jorhat and Dibrugarh, each with a capacity of 100,000 litres per day. Plans are also underway to establish two more plants in Dhemaji and Cachar. Dairy farmers received promising news with a subsidy scheme providing Rs 5 per litre via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for milk sold through cooperative societies, offering substantial support to their livelihoods.
The Cabinet further promoted economic growth by recognizing the Oil Palm Crop as a Cash Crop in Assam and approved guidelines for developing wood-based industries through new industrial estates. A commitment to enhancing tea tourism was highlighted with projects at Lepetkata Tea Estate in Dibrugarh and Durrung Tea Estate in Sonitpur.
In an environmental measure, the Cabinet decided against converting Deochali PRF to a Reserve Forest in Dibrugarh. Additionally, manual applications will be accepted under Mission Basundhara until January 31 for public institutions.
For small traders and vendors, particularly vegetable and paan-tamul sellers, there was relief as the state exempted them from paying fees to Mahaldars. Educational reforms were also on the agenda, with a sub-committee established to review and suggest measures for provincializing schools, specifically focusing on inclusion.
These strategic decisions reflect Assam’s commitment to infrastructure development, economic growth, environmental responsibility, and social welfare, aiming to enhance the quality of life for its residents.
