Urgent Appeal: TUN Strongly Opposes Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing, Protecting Naga Livelihoods at Stake
In a recent statement issued on Wednesday, Kekhwengulo Lea, President of the Tenyimi Union Nagaland (TUN), voiced strong opposition to the proposed fencing of the Indo-Myanmar border, highlighting its profound impacts on the identity, heritage, and dignity of the Naga people. Lea emphasized that the fence represents more than just a physical division; it is a direct attack on the cultural integrity and historical rights of the Naga communities.
The statement calls on the central government to reconsider its decision, underscoring the urgency of protecting ancestral lands and ensuring the preservation of the Naga people’s heritage and dignity. Lea reminded of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), introduced in the 1950s, which had previously enabled limited cross-border interaction. However, subsequent regulations have drastically restricted these movements, hindering Naga communities’ ability to maintain crucial social, cultural, and economic ties across the border.
The TUN urges all Naga individuals, communities, and organizations to collectively resist the border fencing project, advocating for a united front to safeguard the community’s future from further division and fragmentation. This call to action stresses the importance of unity and collective effort in opposing measures that threaten to erode the cultural and historical fabric of the Naga people.
The emphasis on unity and cultural preservation reflects the broader concerns of indigenous rights and the impacts of national border policies on local communities. As discussions continue, the outcome of this appeal will be crucial for the Naga’s collective identity and future.
