Tragic Assam Coal Mine Accident: Urgent Recovery Efforts Underway to Save Trapped Miners
On Wednesday morning, the body of a miner was recovered in Assam’s 3 Kilo area of Umrangso, following a rescue operation involving the Indian Army, Navy Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, and other agencies. The rescue mission was initiated after a mining accident occurred on Monday morning at the Assam Coal Quarry in the Dima Hasao district, where a sudden underground water channel flood trapped several miners. Deputy Commandant of the 1st Battalion NDRF, N Tiwari, affirmed their commitment to rescuing the trapped individuals swiftly.
Around 30-35 miners managed to escape when water started flooding the mine, but 15-16 individuals remained trapped. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, actively monitored the rescue efforts despite his ongoing roadshow for the February Advantage Assam 2.0 investment initiative in Mumbai and New Delhi. He stated that approximately 100 feet of water still poses a challenge within the mine. Sarma also shared the names of nine trapped workers on social media, including Ganga Bahadur Shreth from Nepal and Sanjit Sarkar from West Bengal. The rest are locals from Assam. Efforts continue to save the trapped miners while the state holds its breath for positive developments.
