Chennai, Jan 6: Health authorities in Chennai have confirmed that two children have tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and are currently recovering. Reportedly, the cases were associated with typical respiratory symptoms such as fever, cold, and cough, as stated by medical professionals.
The Tamil Nadu Health Department informed IANS that efforts are underway to contain the virus’s spread. The first case emerged at a private hospital in Chetpet, while another case surfaced at a pediatric hospital in Guindy. Initially exhibiting seasonal illness symptoms, comprehensive testing revealed HMPV infections in both children.
Human Metapneumovirus, discovered in 2001, predominantly affects young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems. It shares a virus family with the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and can lead to mild to severe respiratory conditions, including pneumonia and bronchitis. Typical symptoms encompass fever, cough, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, wheezing, and fatigue, with severe cases potentially necessitating hospitalization.
Health officials are in active discussions to roll out safety measures and preventive strategies statewide. HMPV and COVID-19 have similarities, notably their tendency to cause respiratory illnesses and heightened risks for vulnerable populations, including young children and the elderly. Both viruses propagate via respiratory secretions, close contact, or contaminated surfaces, presenting transmission risks in crowded or unsanitary conditions.
Currently, there is no available vaccine nor recommended antiviral treatment for HMPV, prompting authorities to emphasize prevention and monitoring. The situation underscores an essential public health reminder: vigilance and proactive measures are pivotal in managing and preventing virus outbreaks, especially concerning respiratory infections affecting high-risk groups.
