Guwahati, Jan. 6: The Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police detailed its revitalized operations over the past 20 months, highlighting major successes in combating wildlife crime, drug trafficking, and terrorism. During a press meet at the Assam Police Headquarters, SDGP Harmeet Singh and STF Chief Dr. Partha Sarathi Mahanta marked this period from March 2023 to December 2024 as a “revival” for the task force, originally established in 2008 but only recently achieving significant outcomes.
In wildlife protection, the STF’s vigilant efforts led to the arrest of six poachers and the seizure of critical animal parts, including two rhino horns. SDGP Singh pointed out the intricate link between poachers and regional terrorist groups, emphasizing that proceeds from illicit wildlife trade are used to finance terrorist activities.
Drug trafficking remains a critical focus, with SDGP Singh outlining the importance of dismantling networks from top to bottom and vice versa, following directives from the Union Home Minister. Singh highlighted the danger posed by small-scale drug peddlers in spreading narcotics across society, particularly affecting youth in areas like Panbazar and Paltanbazar. The STF, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s guidance, intensifies efforts against these peddlers.
On the counter-terrorism front, the capture of the ISIS India chief in March 2024 marked a significant milestone. Operation Praghat, launched that December, aims to further dismantle terror networks, including sleeper cells connected to the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).
Additionally, operations against the Rohingya networks across Northeastern states have been crucial. While significant achievements are made, SDGP Singh stressed the ongoing nature of efforts like Operation Praghat, advising caution in sharing detailed updates prematurely.
The revitalized STF continues to enhance safety and security in Assam, tackling both local and international crime dimensions with renewed vigor and strategic interventions.
