NPP Urgently Demands Enhanced Security on Indo-Bangla Border to Safeguard Nations
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) in Shillong has raised concerns over reports of Bangladeshi nationals entering India via the Meghalaya border, urging the central government to enhance security along the 443 km international border. VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh labeled the situation as “alarming,” emphasizing the need for urgent measures to curb illegal infiltration.
The socio-political dynamics in Bangladesh are possibly driving its citizens to seek refuge, increasing the vulnerability of the border. This comes as Delhi police recently dismantled a network comprising both Indian and Bangladeshi nationals who aided the illegal settlement of Bangladeshis in India. The operation led to the arrest of four individuals, including a couple, with several more suspected Bangladeshis under interrogation.
The syndicate reportedly utilized the “donkey route,” an illegal immigration method involving arduous treks to evade official checkpoints. Their operations were modular, facilitating the movement of infiltrators from Meghalaya’s border to railway stations in Assam, and ultimately to Kolkata.
The VPP also urged neighboring northeastern states to remain vigilant against such infiltrations. The situation exposes the porous nature of the border and the need for coordinated action to maintain security in the region.
