Congress Challenges CM: Can You Outshine Northeastern Neighbors in Per Capita Income with Unstoppable Growth?
Guwahati, Jan. 5: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has issued a strong challenge to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to elevate Assam’s per capita income above that of neighboring Northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Mizoram. APCC chief Bhupen Borah highlighted Assam’s economic shortfall during a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, pointing out the state’s lagging per capita income compared to these states.
Borah questioned the Chief Minister’s claims of economic progress under the “double-engine” government, emphasizing that a substantial improvement in Assam’s per capita income is required. He dismissed the notion of aiming for a top 10 per capita income rank before the 2026 elections as unrealistic. Furthermore, he drew attention to Assam’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), which stands at Rs 6,43,089 crore, noting its absence from the top 10 states with the highest GSDP. In contrast, states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat lead the rankings.
Critiquing Sarma’s leadership, Borah described him as a “credit monger,” focusing on personal promotion rather than genuine economic development. He argued that while the Chief Minister claims Assam is thriving, the benefits are limited to his associates and select non-Assamese contractors, leaving the larger Assamese public out of this purported progress.
Drawing parallels to the BJP’s 2004 “India is Shining” campaign, Borah predicted a political shift in 2026 similar to the rise of Congress’ Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister. He reminded the Chief Minister of the ticking political timeline, noting that his current tenure has 490 days remaining, with a countdown beginning at 400 days.
