Empowering Unity: Sikkim CM’s Vision for Gurung Community’s Growth and Development
During the state-level Gurung Tamu Lochar Festival 2024-25, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang underscored the importance of unity and development within the Gurung community. In his address, Tamang expressed heartfelt respect for the Gurung people, emphasizing that cultural events such as these play a pivotal role in fostering community development.
The chief minister praised the efforts of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party, citing its dedication to the progress and empowerment of the Gurung community. He predicted that in two decades, the fruits of the SKM’s endeavors would be apparent, with more Gurung individuals ascending to prominent positions across various sectors.
Tamang called for unity among Gurung communities, not just in Sikkim, but globally. He stressed that a unified community would accelerate progress and highlighted the need for preserving Gurung culture, tradition, and heritage. The festival, he noted, serves as an educational platform for instilling unity and cultural pride in Gurung youth.
In advocating for cultural preservation, Tamang shared a personal story of witnessing Gurung people abroad proudly wearing their traditional attire. He urged Sikkim to embrace and celebrate its heritage with equal enthusiasm. “We are not a party that divides; we strive to unite and fortify Sikkim,” he stated.
Addressing structural support, Tamang signaled his backing for the Gurung community’s institutions. He acknowledged the past coexistence of two Gurung committees, advocating for their unification as a testament to strength through unity. To underscore his commitment, he announced a government allocation of Rs 75 lakh for the construction of a new Gumpa, assuring ample land for its development. Concluding his remarks, Tamang emphasized his leadership ethos, saying, “As chief minister, I always give, never take.”
Through his speech, Tamang projected a vision of cohesive development and cultural pride for the Gurung community in Sikkim.
