Historic Reopening: Assam’s Salmara Indo-Bangla Border Centre Reconnects After 4 Years!
After a four-year hiatus stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the border trade and immigration center along the India-Bangladesh boundary has officially reopened in Assam’s South Salmara district. The reopening ceremony on Thursday was attended by Mankachar’s AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam and senior district officials.
Islam highlighted the significant hardships faced by students, traders, and patients who sought medical treatment in Assam due to the center’s closure. The center’s shuttering forced individuals from lower and central Assam to travel to Bangladesh through Meghalaya’s Dawki or Kolkata, adding to their inconveniences.
Assam maintains two immigration centers for Bangladesh, one at Sutarkandi in Karimganj district and the other at Mankachar. The Sutarkandi center, which also closed during the pandemic, has since resumed operations. Assam shares a 262-kilometer border with Bangladesh.
The reopening of the Mankachar center is anticipated to alleviate travel difficulties and enhance cross-border trade and communication, benefitting both nations’ citizens.
