Historic Moment: Bhalla Triumphantly Takes Oath as Manipur Governor
Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the former Union Home Secretary, officially took up the position as the 19th Governor of Manipur. The ceremonial event took place at the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati, where Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, D. Krishnakumar, administered the oath. The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Following his appointment by the President during a time of ethnic unrest in Manipur, particularly between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023, Bhalla was chosen for his experience and insight into the region. Chief Minister Singh praised him as a dynamic leader well-versed in the state’s realities, and highlighted the central government’s commitment to resolving Manipur’s issues by appointing an intelligent and capable governor. Bhalla, who retired in August last year after serving as the longest-standing Union Home Secretary, reviewed the guard of honor given by the Manipur Rifles. His appointment is expected to contribute significantly to restoring peace and normalcy in the region. Bhalla steps into the role following Lakshman Prasad Acharya, the Governor of Assam, who previously held additional charge of Manipur.
