Transformative Boost: Bhutan’s Gelephu Project Set to Ignite Regional Prosperity, Declares Himanta Biswa Sarma
During a recent four-day visit to Bhutan, Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, underscored the transformative impact of the Gelephu Mindful City (GMC) project on regional development. Speaking to the press, Sarma detailed his discussions with Bhutanese authorities, emphasizing the strategic importance of Gelephu, a town offering seamless connectivity to various districts in Bhutan, and highlighted Assam’s collaborative role in this initiative.
Sarma revealed that the GMC project, once fully realized, is set to revolutionize the regional economy. He praised Bhutan’s efforts to involve Assam, aiming to draw investments from global billionaires who are expected to frequent the luxury hotels planned in Gelephu. He suggested that these investors could extend their investments into Assam’s Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Bongaigaon districts.
Importantly, Sarma clarified that Assam’s engagement does not involve developing a twin city but rather supporting Bhutan in enhancing the region’s economic and infrastructural landscape. Furthermore, he discussed Bhutan’s openness to allowing Assam to utilize its water resources for irrigation and power generation, marking a significant step in bilateral cooperation.
“This visit, facilitated by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, signifies a historic moment. Its effects could shape the future for the next 30 years,” Sarma noted. In strengthening ties, Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, is set to attend the ‘Advantage Assam’ conclave in Guwahati next February. Additionally, the King of Bhutan, His Royal Highness Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, plans to visit Assam with his family in 2025.
Sarma’s visit to Bhutan, initiated by an invitation from the Bhutanese King to attend the National Day celebrations, underscores the deepening partnership between Assam and Bhutan, promising long-term benefits for the region.
