Guwahati: In a notable administrative reshuffle, the Assam government has appointed senior IPS officer Partha Sarathi Mahanta as the new Commissioner of Police for Guwahati. Mahanta succeeds Diganta Barah, taking over a pivotal role in Assam’s law enforcement landscape. A member of the 2006 IPS batch, Mahanta brings a wealth of experience, previously serving as the Joint Commissioner of Police in Guwahati, where he was responsible for managing crime and intelligence affairs. Earlier this year, he was elevated to the rank of Inspector General of Police from Deputy Inspector General of Police.
As Commissioner, Mahanta is tasked with bolstering public safety, refining crime prevention strategies, and enhancing community engagement within Guwahati. The reshuffle aligns with the Assam government’s strategic efforts to optimize its police force’s operational efficiency.
Outgoing Commissioner Diganta Barah has been reassigned as Inspector General of Police (SB) Assam, along with additional duties as the Director of Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, Dergaon. This high-profile change is part of a broader reshuffle involving several senior officers.
IPS Akhilesh Kumar Singh has been appointed Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) while maintaining his current roles in Communication and T&AP sectors. Meanwhile, IPS Lachit Baruah remains the Managing Director of Assam Police Housing Corporation Ltd. IPS Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan transitions from the role of Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) to Inspector General of Police (Admin). Additionally, IPS Vivek Raj Singh is set to handle the Inspector General of Police (T&AP) role concurrently with his existing responsibilities in MPC and BTAD.
These changes underscore a significant moment for Assam’s law enforcement machinery, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening its policing framework amid evolving security challenges.
