Unyielding Crisis: Escalating Tensions in Imphal East Amid Relentless Kangpokpi Hills Attacks
Persistent tension grips the peripheral areas of Sanasabi and Yaingangpokpi in Imphal East district, with armed miscreants launching intermittent attacks from the hilltops of Kangpokpi since morning. Utilizing explosive devices and gunfire, these assaults have primarily targeted Meitei-inhabited areas, inciting heavy crossfire between the attackers and security forces, who are valiantly retaliating to contain the escalating violence.
The ongoing clashes have compelled numerous residents to evacuate their homes in search of safer refuge, heightening the distress in the region. In response, authorities have ramped up security measures, striving to protect civilians and stem any further escalation. The situation remains perilous with law enforcement on high alert to maintain order and prevent additional threats.
On December 27, new waves of violence resulted in at least two injuries, among them a policeman, during a gunfight in Manipur’s Imphal East district. Miscreants from the hills executed coordinated gun-and-bomb assaults on Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi villages, which triggered a fierce exchange as security personnel retaliated with equal force. In Sanasabi village, two individuals sustained injuries amid the hostilities. Policeman K Haridash, aged 37, was among those injured, suffering bullet wounds to his left shoulder. He was urgently transported to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment around 3.30 PM.
