Legendary Visionary Osamu Suzuki, Architect of India’s Auto Revolution, Passes Away at 94 – A Heartfelt Tribute
Osamu Suzuki, a key figure who significantly influenced India’s automotive landscape, has passed away at the age of 94 from malignant lymphoma. The announcement was made by Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation. Suzuki’s strategic and bold decision to invest in India when its economy was constrained by a license-based system marked the beginning of a new era. In 1981, he formed a joint venture with the Indian government, Maruti Udyog Ltd, which later transformed into Maruti Suzuki India Ltd after the government sold its stake in 2007, allowing Suzuki Motor Corporation to hold a majority share.
Under Suzuki’s leadership, affordable, high-quality vehicles became available to millions of Indian families, profoundly transforming the nation’s automobile industry. His efforts were not just about business success but also about strengthening Indo-Japanese relations, leading to Suzuki being awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan.
R.C. Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, lauded Suzuki for his foresight and willingness to take risks, attributing the Indian automobile industry’s success to him. Bhargava emphasized Suzuki’s personal bond with India and his strong relationships with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Suzuki, who was born in 1930 and joined Suzuki Motor Co Ltd in 1958, eventually rose to become Chairman in 2000. In 2021, he became a Senior Advisor while his son, Toshihiro Suzuki, took over as CEO. His commitment to excellence and sustainability left an indelible mark on the automotive sector, both in India and globally.
Shradha Suri Marwah, President of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India, praised Suzuki as a “trailblazer” and “innovator,” highlighting his lasting impact on the global automotive community.
Osamu Suzuki’s legacy is a testament to visionary leadership, shaping India’s automotive industry and fostering strong India-Japan ties. His influence will inspire future generations in both business and the automotive sector.
