Discover Meghalaya’s Hidden Treasures: Unveiling and Mapping Heritage Sites for a Richer Cultural Journey
The Meghalaya government has embarked on a significant initiative to identify and map heritage sites across the state, aiming to preserve and promote its rich cultural legacy. Paul Lyngdoh, the Minister of Art and Culture, announced ongoing efforts to thoroughly document these sites, with plans to enhance these activities in the upcoming months.
A pivotal part of this initiative is the state’s endeavor to achieve UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition for its iconic living root bridges. Recently, a delegation from Meghalaya, headed by Lyngdoh, traveled to Paris to lobby for this acknowledgment, underscoring their resolve to boost cultural and educational alliances on a global scale.
In addition, the state government is committed to restoring and preserving historical edifices, notably the 126-year-old Pinewood Hotel. Minister Lyngdoh highlighted the importance of upgrading such heritage hotels to provide visitors with an immersive glimpse into Shillong’s illustrious past.
Meghalaya is renowned for its abundant historical landmarks, including the celebrated Nartiang Monoliths, Kiang Nongbah Monument, and the David Scott Memorial Stone. These efforts reflect Meghalaya’s dedication to safeguarding its cultural and historical treasures, enhancing tourism, and fostering an appreciation for its distinctive heritage.
