New York City Police have detained a “person of interest” in connection with the tragic death of a woman who was reportedly set on fire while sleeping on a stationary subway train in Brooklyn. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. when surveillance footage captured a man calmly igniting the woman’s clothing with a lighter. The two individuals did not appear to know each other.
The suspect was apprehended following a tip from three high school students who recognized him from widely distributed surveillance and police body cam images. The students’ report led transit officers to locate and arrest the man on another subway train. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect, characterizing the crime as “one of the most depraved” acts imaginable.
Officers discovered the victim after smelling smoke while on patrol at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station, finding her clothing fully engulfed in flames. Despite efforts to extinguish the fire, she was pronounced dead on the scene. Unbeknownst to the officers, the suspect had remained nearby, seated on a bench at the station. The lighter found in his pocket further incriminated him.
This incident marked the second fatality on the New York subway that Sunday. Earlier, police responded to a separate assault at the 61st Street-Woodside Station in Queens, where a stab wound victim was pronounced dead, and another injured individual was hospitalized.
This series of violent events has heightened concerns about safety on the city’s transit system. In response, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed National Guard members to assist the police by conducting random bag searches for weapons. Additional personnel have been assigned to patrol the subways during the holiday season, underscoring ongoing efforts to prevent further senseless tragedies.
