Norovirus Outbreak Linked to Raw Oysters at Los Angeles Event
Over 80 individuals contracted norovirus after consuming raw oysters at an event held at the Hollywood Palladium, organized to celebrate the Los Angeles Times’ list of the 101 best restaurants on December 3. This was confirmed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The affected oysters, identified as Fanny Bay Select and Fanny Bay XS from Pacific Northwest Shellfish Co., were packed on or after November 25. A recall notice for these oysters was issued on December 13, shortly before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a warning on December 18. The warning advised restaurants, retailers, and consumers in 15 states, from Hawaii to New York, against selling or consuming these potentially contaminated oysters.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea, often referred to as the “stomach flu.” While symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever typically resolve within one to three days, the virus can be particularly dangerous for young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Dehydration is a serious risk, with symptoms including decreased urination, dry mouth, and dizziness.
The FDA has cautioned that food containing norovirus may appear normal in taste, smell, and appearance. It urges anyone developing symptoms after consuming the affected oysters to seek medical care. Moreover, those who have been exposed can still spread the virus for several days even after symptoms have subsided.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with consuming raw shellfish and the importance of proper food safety measures. Consumers experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider promptly.
