Heart-Wrenching Dog Smuggling Unveiled: Two Arrested in Guwahati Crackdown
In Guwahati’s Lokhra area, two individuals, Rupam Sarkar and Dipu Das, were detained by locals for allegedly smuggling dogs for meat. The arrest followed observations of their suspicious activities involving the capture of street dogs. Upon confrontation, Sarkar admitted to the smuggling operation, disclosing plans to sell the dogs in Pillangkata on the Assam-Meghalaya border for Rs 800 each. He revealed a heightened demand for dog meat around Christmas and confessed to having sold three to four dogs already.
Though Sarkar claimed to not know the identities of the buyers, he was in possession of their contact information. Meanwhile, Das, who knew Sarkar, denied awareness of his involvement in the illegal trade. The police were notified after the duo was caught, leading to their arrest. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in combating illegal animal trade in the region.
