Devastating Missile Attack in Ukraine: Russian Strikes Hit 6 Embassies and Beloved Historic Cathedral
On December 20, 2024, Kyiv experienced a devastating Russian missile strike that resulted in significant damage to the Ukrainian capital. At least one person was killed, and the raid targeted several vital locations, including a historical cathedral and five embassies—those of Albania, Argentina, Palestine, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Portugal— all housed in a single building. Local media reported that the strike, which occurred in the city center, led to loud explosions, fires, and damage to multiple structures, including blown-out windows and car damage on the streets. Firefighters worked to control the situation amid ongoing chaos.
Ukraine’s military reported intercepting all five of the Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles aimed at Kyiv, yet 12 people were injured in the chaos, with five requiring hospitalization. The Red Cross and local emergency services were on the scene assisting in rescue efforts and damage assessment.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed no casualties among diplomatic personnel. The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, condemned the attack as another example of Russia’s aggression toward civilian targets, underscoring a lack of interest in pursuing peace.
The Russian Defence Ministry claimed the missile strike successfully hit a Ukrainian SBU security service command center, a missile design and construction site, and a U.S.-made Patriot missile system, all in retaliation for Ukraine’s previous attack on Russia’s Rostov region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian air defenses shot down 40 out of 65 drones launched by Russia across the country overnight, with an additional 20 failing to reach their targets.
The attack also extended to Kherson in southern Ukraine, where Russian forces damaged energy facilities, resulting in power outages affecting up to 60,000 consumers, and causing one death with several injuries as reported by the regional governor. The historical St. Nicholas Cathedral also suffered damage, described by Ukraine’s minister for cultural affairs, Mykola Tochytskyi, as a “monument of national significance.”
