Silchar Man Held Over Alleged Bajrang Dal Role in Assault, Extortion
A man accused of carrying out organised assaults, extortion and robbery while allegedly using the name of Bajrang Dal has been detained by police in Silchar, Assam. The accused, identified as Rupak Roy, also known as Badshah, was taken into custody after a case was registered at Silchar Sadar Police Station and officers launched an investigation into the allegations.
According to the complaint, Roy purportedly identified himself as a member of Bajrang Dal and was involved in incidents of group assault, physical intimidation, extortion and snatching. Police say these allegations prompted the filing of the case and his subsequent detention for questioning; he remains in the custody of Silchar Sadar Police Station while investigators gather evidence.
Police sources indicated the probe is ongoing and that officers are examining all available leads and witness accounts to ascertain the extent of the accused’s activities and any conspirators involved. Authorities said further action will depend on the findings of forensic checks, statements and other evidence being collected.
Bajrang Dal functionaries have publicly distanced the organisation from Roy, saying he is no longer associated with the group. Representatives claimed he was expelled about one-and-a-half years ago for allegedly violating the organisation’s rules and principles and therefore is not acting on its behalf.
The organisation also issued a statement saying it would not accept responsibility for any crimes committed by individuals misusing its name and that it supports appropriate legal action if the allegations against Roy are substantiated in court.
The arrest has prompted discussion in Silchar, where residents are following developments closely. Police reiterated that they will take further legal steps based on the investigation’s outcome and any charges formally framed by prosecutors.
