“Transforming Sikkim: Revolutionary PET Bottle Shredding Machines Launched in Gangtok for Superior Waste Management”
In a significant move to enhance urban cleanliness and waste management, Mr. Bhoj Raj Rai, Minister of the Urban Development Department, inaugurated two PET Bottle Shredding Machines at MG Marg. This initiative is part of the broader Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) aimed at streamlining waste processing across the state.
The launch event saw attendance from notable figures including Mr. Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, MLA and Advisor to the Urban Development Department; Mr. Sundeep Malu, Executive Councillor of MG Marg; and Mr. MT Sherpa, Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It also featured Mr. Jigmee Wangchuk Bhutia, Director of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), among other dignitaries and officials.
Minister Rai emphasized the machines’ critical role in environmental management. The PET Bottle Shredding Machines are designed to break down polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles into smaller pieces, facilitating easier handling and transportation to recycling centers. This contributes significantly to a cleaner environment.
Beyond MG Marg, five shredding machines have been strategically placed at key locations, including the Namchi Taxi Stand, Rangpo Bazaar on the highway, and Jorethang near the Taxi Parking Plaza. Each machine, operating on a single-phase power supply and weighing 380 kilograms, features a bin capacity of 1000 bottles and is equipped with wheels for mobility.
In addition to these installations, the event also marked the launch of a Nukkad Natak, a street play focused on “Source Segregation and Waste Management.” This initiative aims to educate the public on proper waste disposal practices and the importance of segregating waste at the source.
Organized by the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) under the Government of Sikkim, the program underscores a strong commitment to improving waste management systems and promoting environmental sustainability in the region. This initiative is a crucial step towards achieving a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
