Transformative Siang Project Crucial for Arunachal’s Prosperity, Declares Deputy CM Chowna Mein
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein addressed a large public gathering in Boleng, Siang district, highlighting the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project’s national significance. He countered misconceptions by anti-dam activists, emphasizing its declaration as a National Project in 2008. Mein underscored the project’s strategic importance in national security, especially given China’s plans to build a massive 60,000 MW dam upstream on the Tsangpo River, which poses potential risks to nearby communities.
Mein outlined the manifold benefits of the multipurpose project, including flood control, water storage, irrigation, power generation, and navigation improvements. He assured that the dam would enhance the region’s resilience to floods and drive socio-economic growth. Addressing security concerns, Mein clarified that the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) is solely to safeguard survey operations and not to intimidate locals. He encouraged community support for the survey work for the Project Feasibility Report (PFR) and clarified the subsequent steps, including impact assessment and public hearings, which would involve local community input on the dam’s approval.
Emphasizing the project’s benefits, Mein stated that it aims to improve local prosperity, create jobs, and generate state revenue. He assured affected villages would receive compensation and rehabilitation according to the LARR Act 2013, with plans for model villages offering healthcare, education, and infrastructure. He also promised that temporary labor colonies would not alter the region’s demography, as laborers would leave upon project completion.
A committee led by former Minister Tamiyo Taga has been formed to raise public awareness of the project’s benefits. Mein reiterated his commitment to Arunachal Pradesh’s development, urging public unity and engagement to maximize the National Project’s advantages for the state and the broader northeastern region.
