India’s 28-Member Weightlifting Powerhouse Poised for Triumph at the 2024 Asian Youth and Junior Championships in Doha
A formidable 28-member Indian squad is set to make an impression at the upcoming Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2024 in Doha, Qatar, commencing tomorrow. The event, scheduled from December 19 to 25, will showcase India’s youthful talent with 15 competitors in the junior division (ages 15 to 20) and 13 in the youth division (ages 13 to 17).
The championships will unfold across 40 categories, evenly split between the junior and youth levels, offering medals in snatch, clean and jerk, and overall total for each weight class. India’s participation is highlighted by promising athletes like Martina Devi Maibam, who will contest in the Asian Junior Championships. Martina, 18, recently achieved sixth place at the junior world championships, recording an impressive total lift of 237kg—101kg in snatch and 136kg in clean and jerk.
Adding to India’s medal hopes is Dhanush Loganathan, a standout performer and the sole Indian podium finisher at this year’s IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships. Dhanush clinched bronze in the men’s 55kg category for both total and snatch, positioning him as a top contender in the men’s competitions.
As the curtains rise on this prestigious event, the Indian contingent aims to showcase its strength and skill on the Asian stage, buoyed by the potential of its rising stars. Their performance in Doha is not just a testament to their training and dedication but also a promising indicator of India’s growing prowess in weightlifting on the international arena.
