Urgent: Valsad Fishermen Strike for Justice, Demand Immediate Government Action in Gujarat
The territorial conflict between fishermen from South Gujarat and Saurashtra has intensified, leading to a significant protest over the weekend. Fishermen from Valsad, specifically from 10 villages in Umargam taluka, refrained from fishing on Sunday and gathered at Nargol port to demand state intervention for a lasting resolution. The Valsad fishermen claim those from Jafrabad and other Saurashtra regions are encroaching upon their fishing zones using advanced equipment, undermining the livelihoods of the less-equipped local fishermen. In contrast, the fishermen from Jafrabad refute these allegations, accusing the Valsad fishermen of theft and aggression at sea.
Hodiwala, a leader from the Nargol fishermen community, pointed out a broken pact with Jafrabad fishermen, who allegedly respect territorial boundaries for only a year before resuming incursions. He emphasized the difficulties faced due to box fishing—an advanced method that depletes space and damages nets for Valsad fishermen. Tensions have escalated into violent encounters, with multiple incidents reported this year of clashes and mutual accusations of theft at sea.
Both sides call for government mediation. The Valsad fishermen seek a formula to ensure mutual respect for designated fishing areas, while Saurashtra’s representatives express willingness to negotiate but reject demands for dividing the territory equally. The ongoing dispute has also drawn police attention, with investigations initiated following recent allegations of assault and theft.
Fishermen like Manish Tandel from Lodhari emphasize the economic significance of the region’s marine resources, urging authorities to formulate a fair solution. The conflict highlights the broader challenges of maritime territorial disputes and the need for equitable management to safeguard livelihoods and local economies.
