Revolutionary Milestone: India’s Inaugural Diabetes Biobank Sparks Hope and Innovation!
India has launched its first diabetes biobank, designed to advance research on diabetes and its variations prevalent in the Indian population. Developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in partnership with the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), this Chennai-based facility collates and manages biological samples. According to MDRF Chairman V. Mohan, the biobank, which has been in the works for several years, now contains a diverse array of blood samples from different diabetic groups, including Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes.
Recent findings, published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research, highlight that the biobank will not only aid in identifying new biomarkers for early diagnosis but also help in creating personalized treatment approaches. Furthermore, it will support studies tracing diabetes progression, thereby improving management and prevention strategies.
A comprehensive government study, spanning from 2008 to 2020 and involving over 1.2 lakh participants across India, underscores the rising prevalence of diabetes in both urban and rural populations. This expansive study strengthens the foundation for diabetes research in India. The biobank also benefits from samples collected by the ICMR Young Diabetes Registry, focusing on young diabetics, who often exhibit distinct clinical features, making it a valuable reservoir for future research endeavors. Published on December 17, 2024, this initiative marks a crucial step in combating the increasing diabetes epidemic in the country.
