Breaking: Shocking Exit as Cong Quits NPP-Led Coalition in KHADC, Reshaping Political Landscape
Congress MDCs Withdraw Support from NPP-Led KHADC Executive Committee
By Our Reporter
SHILLONG, Dec 13: In a significant political shift, all three Congress Members of District Council (MDCs) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) have retracted their support from the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Executive Committee (EC). This decision effectively ends the alliance between the Congress and the NPP in the council.
The Congress MDCs who withdrew their support are PN Syiem, formerly the Deputy Chief Executive Member, Ronnie V Lyngdoh, who also serves as an MLA, and Victor Rani, who joined the Congress after leaving the NPP. The withdrawal, which occurs just months before the council elections, had been anticipated given the increasing internal party pressure.
PN Syiem reported that the decision follows a directive from the Congress’ top leadership, and was influenced by internal meetings where members expressed dissatisfaction with the alliance. The Chief Executive Member of KHADC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, assured that this development will not impact the administration as they maintain a majority with 17 MDCs in the 30-member council.
Despite concerns, Syiem expressed confidence in holding the majority even if a no-confidence motion arises in the upcoming winter session. He acknowledged the achievements of the current executive committee, asserting it has accomplished significant progress in its tenure.
During a press conference, PN Syiem emphasized that their decision aligns with the desires of party members, following consultations with Block Congress Committees. He noted that while opinions on their withdrawal may vary, the decision respects the majority’s views within the party.
Victor Rani, representing the Jirang constituency, also resigned his executive membership. The Congress believes their withdrawal will not hinder their election prospects as the electorate evaluates the EC’s performance over the past year and a half.
