
Heartfelt Tribute: Beloved Assam Social Scientist and Freedom Fighter Abani Borthakur Passes Away at 95
Abani Borthakur, a respected social scientist, dedicated leftist, and esteemed freedom fighter, passed away at 95 on Tuesday, July 23, at KGMT Hospital in Geetanagar, Guwahati. Borthakur had been battling various age-related health issues for some time.
His remains will be taken to his birthplace in Nazira for the final rites on Wednesday. A stalwart against injustice, Borthakur was actively engaged in social and political forums until his health declined. Known for his staunch criticism of oppressive government policies, he relentlessly protested caste-based discrimination and exploitation, advocating for the marginalized.
In February, Borthakur was hospitalized at Apollo Hospital in Guwahati due to health concerns but subsequently returned home. Despite his recovery, his health remained fragile. A former principal of Nazira College, Borthakur was a fervent advocate for the working class and served as the secretary of the Assam unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI).
Born in 1929, Borthakur’s activism began early, significantly contributing to India’s freedom movement during his time at Cotton College. In 1945, he served as the secretary of the Students’ Federation in Sivasagar district, signaling a lifelong dedication to social reform. From the 1950s onwards, he played pivotal roles in the CPI, including assistant secretary and editorial board member. He led the Assam Students’ Federation as general secretary from 1948 to 1958.
Borthakur completed his graduation in 1955 and earned a master’s degree in history in 1963. He was instrumental in establishing Nazira College, a key educational institution in undivided Sivasagar, and became its principal in 1982. His numerous writings continue to inspire academic and social thought.
The news of Borthakur’s passing has been met with deep sorrow, with social media flooded with tributes. His legacy as a lifelong champion of justice and equality remains influential, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him and beyond.
