Shocking Arrest in Nagaon: Two Apprehended with Rare Tiger Skin and Skeletal Parts
Guwahati: In a significant operation, the anti-smuggling unit of the Guwahati Customs Division apprehended two individuals from Nilbagan village in Nagaon district on December 9. The arrests were made following the recovery of the skin and skeletal remains of a male baby Royal Bengal tiger, believed to be about two years old.
The operation unfolded in the Nilbagan area, where the suspects were intercepted while traveling on a two-wheeler registered in Nagaon. Acting on specific intelligence, the officers discovered a white gunny bag containing the tiger skin, which measured approximately 5 feet 10 inches, and over 200 bone parts, including the skull, jaws, and canine teeth. The total weight of the skeletal remains was recorded at 2,341 grams.
The suspects were reportedly planning to smuggle the tiger skin, having killed the animal over a year ago in the Karbi Anglong district. Authorities are delving deeper to uncover the network’s reach and involvement in the illegal wildlife trade.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of combating wildlife trafficking in the region, where precious species like the Royal Bengal tiger continue to be victims of illegal activities. The case remains under investigation, aiming to dismantle the broader network involved. Further updates are awaiting as officials progress with their inquiries.
