Mizoram Government Faces Delays in Establishing State Human Rights Commission

The Mizoram government has yet to appoint a chairperson, members, or supporting staff for its State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), nearly two months after its establishment was announced. A senior official from the Home Department has indicated that the selection committee, led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, is still in the process of finalizing their recommendations for these positions, which include a chairperson, two members, and 13 officers along with supporting staff.

The establishment of the SHRC was announced by the Mizoram government on October 11, following a directive from the Gauhati High Court. This directive came after the court’s Aizawl bench had given a final two-month deadline on September 6, demanding the state government set up the commission. Failure to meet this deadline would have led to contempt proceedings against the state.

During a recent hearing on November 27, government advocate H. Lalmalsawmi updated the court on the progress, stating that hiring suitable individuals for the roles and securing a proper location for the commission are underway, though it will require additional time. Consequently, the court has postponed the matter for another eight weeks.

This prolonged delay poses concerns over the state’s commitment to human rights issues, yet the government remains optimistic about finalizing appointments soon. The northeastern state continues to await the full operationalization of its Human Rights Commission, a move seen as essential for safeguarding human rights and addressing related grievances in the region. The ongoing process has drawn public attention and highlights the pressing need for streamlined and efficient bureaucratic procedures.
