Sikkim Secures Rs. 5 Crore Grant for Climate Resilience in Cities 2.0 Challenge
GANGTOK: In a commendable achievement, Sikkim has been granted Rs. 5 crore along with technical assistance through the Cities 2.0 Challenge, a significant initiative under the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). This challenge is a part of the Government of India’s larger Smart Cities Mission, specifically involving the ‘Component 2: Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation’ segment. Known as CITIIS—City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain—the program rewards innovative and scalable urban development solutions focusing on climate resilience and sustainability.
Sikkim’s proposal was singled out for its progressive strategy aimed at lessening climate change impacts while maintaining the state’s unique environmental and cultural heritage, according to a released statement. The grant and accompanying technical support are set to advance climate-smart urban infrastructure and green initiatives in the state’s urban areas.
Jitendra Singh Raje, the Urban Development commissioner-cum-secretary, expressed his satisfaction with the award, noting, "This recognition highlights our dedication to tackling climate change and pursuing sustainable development for future generations. With the backing of the NIUA, we are poised to set an example in integrating climate resilience into urban planning processes."
The Urban Development department also lauded Chief Minister P.S. Golay’s steadfast commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience, a commitment reflected in this recognition by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. This award not only underscores Sikkim’s leadership in sustainable urban development but also emphasizes the state’s resolve to create resilient urban landscapes capable of withstanding climate challenges.
