Shocking Turn in Manipur Missing Man Case: 3 Brave Women Detained During Emotional Raj Bhavan Protest
On Monday, Manipur Police detained three women attempting to protest near Raj Bhavan in Imphal, demanding answers for the disappearance of 56-year-old Laishram Kamalbabu from an army camp in Leimakhong, Kangpokpi district. Among the detainees was Kamalbabu’s wife. The protest, orchestrated by the women’s organization Imagi Meira, was thwarted by women police officers stationed in the high-security zone. “The women tried to demonstrate in front of the Raj Bhavan but were stopped,” a police official stated. The women were taken to the City Police Station and subsequently released.
Thokchom Sujata, the convenor of Imagi Meira, expressed frustration at the lack of progress, stating, “We wanted to meet the governor… Authorities claim a search is underway, but there has been no substantial outcome.” Later, Sujata was also detained, though the reason was not clarified.
The disappearance of Kamalbabu, last seen on November 25 at the 57 Mountain Division Headquarters in Leimakhong, has sparked widespread protests across Manipur. These rallies have involved family members and activists voicing their demands for accountability and answers from authorities, adding to the mounting pressure on the police and administration.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh acknowledged the case, noting he had received “key evidence” regarding Kamalbabu’s disappearance. This evidence, submitted by representatives of a Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in response to the case, reportedly confirms Kamalbabu’s disappearance from the military headquarters.
In a statement, Chief Minister Singh confirmed meeting with JAC representatives and the family, noting their active pursuit of Kamalbabu’s whereabouts. The incident has heightened security and accountability concerns within the state, with public outcry intensifying as concrete developments remain elusive. The ongoing discourse continues to challenge authorities amid the rising demand for transparency and resolution.
