Breaking Free: Federation of Civil Societies Manipur Urges Government to Lift Internet Ban for Empowered Connectivity – Northeast News
Imphal: The Federation of Civil Societies Manipur has called on the state government to lift the ongoing mobile internet suspension in nine districts affected by violence. The organization argues that the ban, which aims to maintain law and order, is significantly disrupting economic and social activities in Manipur. Entrepreneurs, professionals, students, businesses, and healthcare services have all been severely affected by the lack of internet access. Students, in particular, are struggling as they rely on the internet for educational resources and have lost opportunities to engage with campus placement agencies, further impeded by curfews and strikes.
The internet services were suspended starting November 16 after violence erupted in the Imphal valley. This unrest was triggered by the discovery of the bodies of three of the six missing women and children from Jiribam, who were allegedly killed by Kuki militants. The violence saw protestors targeting the homes and properties of several legislators. In response, the government implemented the internet suspension across the districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam.
The Federation emphasizes that while maintaining law and order is crucial, the authorities must also consider the adverse effects of the internet ban on daily life. They urge the government to find a balanced approach that restores connectivity while ensuring public safety. The prolonged digital blackout is not just an inconvenience; it inhibits social connectivity and economic activities, pressing the state into a challenging position. As the state navigates these tumultuous times, the restoration of mobile internet services remains a critical issue, stressing the need for a solution that supports both security and societal welfare.
