Engaging Tradition: Muzzle-Loading Shooting at Hornbill Festival Draws Enthusiasts
Dimapur, Dec 9: The Hornbill Festival at Kisama has become a magnet for both local and international tourists, with its unique muzzle-loading shooting experience gaining significant popularity. This activity, deeply rooted in local heritage, shines a spotlight on the traditional skills of the Konyak Nagas, known for their exceptional gunsmithing expertise.
K Moba and Nyeiba, seasoned craftsmen from Changlangshu village in Nagaland’s Mon district, boast 35 years of experience in gunmaking. They have set up a stall at Craftscape, Kisama, where they exhibit their traditional gun-making techniques. Known for their quality and durability, their handmade firearms are sought after throughout Nagaland and beyond. Visitors can purchase single-barrelled guns for Rs 8,500 and double-barrelled ones for Rs 18,000, with special orders also accepted.
The festival offers an immersive experience, allowing visitors to fire these historic muzzle-loading guns for a fee of Rs 200 per shot. This activity not only provides a glimpse into the centuries-old traditions of hunting and defense but also highlights the tribe’s mastery in weapon crafting.
Parallelly, the eighth day of the 25th Hornbill Festival celebrated the vibrant cultural heritage of Nagaland. Eighteen cultural troupes performed diverse traditional acts at Kisama’s main arena, bringing the rich traditions of Nagaland’s tribes to life. Union Minister for Labour and Employment and Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, graced the morning session as the honoured guest, witnessing the vivid performances that showcased the state’s cultural abundance.
The inclusion of muzzle-loading shooting and traditional performances at the Hornbill Festival not only enriches the event’s cultural tapestry but also offers tourists a unique, hands-on experience of Nagaland’s historical and cultural legacy.
