Chennai Mayor Triumphantly Launches Life-Changing Tuberculosis Awareness Campaign Vehicle
Chennai Mayor R. Priya launched the ‘Tuberculosis-Free Tamil Nadu’ awareness campaign vehicle at Ripon Buildings on Saturday. This initiative is part of the Greater Chennai Corporation’s efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB), with a goal set by the State government to eradicate the disease by 2025. According to the GCC, by November 2024, 288,331 people had been tested for TB, with treatments administered to 7,968 individuals at public health centers and 4,857 at private facilities. Among the 8,735 contacts of diagnosed patients, 5,767 received preventive treatment. The awareness campaign focuses on early diagnosis, decreasing TB-related fatalities, and reducing its impact by involving health workers in community outreach. These workers will conduct tests on high-risk individuals, collect sputum samples, identify comorbidities, and provide preventive care to household contacts of TB and HIV patients. Additionally, they aim to address malnutrition issues among TB patients.
