On November 5, 2024, Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar became a cultural epicenter as it hosted the grand finale of the Arunachal Rang Mahotsav 2024, the state’s pioneering international theatre festival. Graced by Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. General KT Parnaik, the festival, running from October 22 to November 5, dazzled attendees with both national and international performing arts.
In his address, Governor Parnaik extolled theatre as an essential societal medium, capable of delivering profound social messages. He highlighted the enduring tradition of Rangmanch in India, focusing on its reflective role in portraying societal challenges and aspirations. Advocating for widespread theatre activities, he called for efforts to preserve Arunachal’s cultural heritage across all districts and villages.
The Governor lauded the festival as Northeast India’s longest and largest theatre celebration, featuring over 33 performances from global and Indian artists. The theme, “Route to Roots,” was a reminder of the importance of cultural connectedness amidst global diversity. The festival curated a vibrant mix of narratives, fostering artistic and cultural exchanges.
Beyond the stage, the festival included seven parallel events such as seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and interactive sessions, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the arts. A highlight was “Tani La Tanyo,” a play rooted in Arunachal Pradesh’s folklore, directed by Festival Director Riken Ngomle, who is also the Founder of Roots Art and Cultural Trust Society.
Commending all involved parties, Governor Parnaik described the festival as a cultural renaissance for Arunachal, urging the preservation of heritage while establishing this event as a tradition that bridges local and global art forms. Esteemed speakers like Assembly Speaker Shri Tesam Pongte and celebrated theatre director Dr. Anuradha Kapur underscored the festival’s mission to unite through diversity.
The Arunachal Rang Mahotsav 2024 firmly positioned itself as a global stage for artistic collaboration, weaving the rich folklore of Arunachal with creative performances both from India and abroad, paving the way for a lasting cultural legacy in the state.
