Empowering Justice: Assam Celebrates the Inauguration of a Revolutionary Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate Court Building

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Vijay Bishnoi, inaugurated a new court building for the Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate in Lakhipur, Cachar district, on December 1. This initiative is poised to enhance judicial efficiency in Lakhipur and the broader Cachar district, fulfilling the aspirations of people across Barak Valley. Highlighting Lakhipur’s recognition as a co-district, CM Sarma emphasized the court’s anticipated role in shaping the region’s judiciary.

CM Sarma outlined the state’s judicial evolution, citing the reconfiguration of the Cachar district’s legal framework post-independence. Recent initiatives by the state government include constructing new judicial buildings in various districts, equipped with modern amenities such as libraries and witness deposition centers.

Efforts have also been made to strengthen district judicial systems in newly formed districts. Sarma stressed the state’s commitment to ‘Ease of Justice’, establishing POCSO courts across 17 districts to expedite cases involving child marriage and sexual offenses. Plans are underway to create specialized courts, including a Commercial Court in Guwahati and an NDPS court.

To reduce court backlogs, the state withdrew nearly 81,000 petty cases. Initiatives like E-service centers and the “Borsha” app have been launched to support distressed women by providing legal information. Sarma urged the legal community to avoid exploiting loopholes that delay trials, particularly in cases involving crimes against women and children.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah’s leadership, India’s legal framework is undergoing transformative changes, replacing colonial-era codes with modern counterparts to streamline the judicial process. Emphasizing scientific evidence collection, Sarma announced the construction of a National Forensic Science University campus in Guwahati, aimed at enhancing investigative training for police officers. These advancements underscore the state’s commitment to modernizing its judicial system and ensuring swift justice delivery.
