Bus Tragedy at West Bengal-Sikkim Border Claims Seventh Life
In a tragic development, the Rangpo bus accident near Bhotey Bhir on the West Bengal-Sikkim border has claimed its seventh victim. Jaimuddin Ansari, 45, a construction worker, succumbed to his injuries at STNM Hospital in Gangtok early Monday morning. This unfortunate incident occurred on a Gangtok-Siliguri ‘Quality’ bus, which resulted in six fatalities at the scene. Ansari and another severely injured passenger later passed away.
The accident left over 15 individuals injured, who are currently receiving medical care in Gangtok. The victims hail from various regions, including West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar. Authorities are keeping a close watch on their condition, while an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh has been announced for the families of two victims from West Bengal.
As investigations continue, the Kalimpong district administration is actively involved in assessing the circumstances of the crash. In a move to prevent future mishaps, a joint team from the Public Works Department NH10, Police, and Regional Transport Office is scheduled to inspect the accident-prone zones of the highway on Monday, evaluating safety measures.
