Groundbreaking Study: Exciting New Medicine Safely Reduces HIV Risk for MSM and Transgender Women in Pune
In a recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Translational Virology and AIDS Research in Pune, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) was identified as both acceptable and safe for Men Having Sex with Men (MSM) and Transgender Women (TGW). PrEP, an oral HIV prevention method, is crucial for high-risk groups, helping reduce the chances of HIV transmission. Despite a significant 66% decline in HIV cases in India since 2000, challenges persist in controlling the infection among MSM and TGW, with few studies exploring PrEP’s feasibility in these communities.
The demonstration project, led by Dr. Seema Sahay, involved 650 participants across Pune, Maharashtra, and Jalandhar, Punjab, monitored for a year. The findings support PrEP’s role in comprehensive HIV prevention strategies, alongside regular testing and consistent condom use. As new long-acting PrEP formulations emerge, they promise to enhance global HIV prevention efforts.
Globally, 5.4 million people living with HIV remain unaware of their status, and 9.3 million are not receiving necessary treatment. India, home to an estimated 2.54 million people living with HIV, is the third most affected country after South Africa and Nigeria. Efforts by NGOs and the National AIDS Control Organisation have reduced new infections by 48% between 2010 and 2021. Despite this progress, approximately 68,000 new infections occur annually, highlighting the need for continued awareness and early intervention.
Experts warn that while advancements in long-acting PrEP and treatment show promise, high costs and limited manufacturing in low and middle-income countries pose significant rollout challenges. Affordable access to these innovations remains crucial to achieving a future free of HIV.
