Tripura CM Manik Saha’s Unyielding Stance: No Tolerance for Journalist Assault – Powerful Statement in North East India

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha declared that attacks on journalists are intolerable, emphasizing his government’s dedication to addressing the challenges faced by media professionals. His statement followed the recent assault on Sujit Acharjee, a local television journalist, who was attacked by a group on Agartala’s outskirts. Six individuals were detained in connection with this incident at Siddhi Ashrama, West Tripura.

At a media skill development workshop, Saha reaffirmed that the state government prioritizes resolving journalists’ issues with care and is committed to their welfare. He also urged journalists to seriously tackle the challenge of fake news. Acharjee, associated with a Bengali TV channel, was one of many victims of such violence; a spate of journalist attacks has been reported, with 47 media personnel assaulted in recent years, and media houses targeted thrice. Notably, in 2017, two journalists, including crime reporter Sudip Dutta Bhowmik and Santanu Bhowmik, were killed in the line of duty. Their cases remain under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Chief Minister Saha also highlighted the growing role of technology in media, indicating an optimistic outlook for addressing challenges through the media skill development workshop. He noted the rising importance and competition within local newspapers and TV channels among readers, contrasting the past reliance on national newspapers.

Public Works Department Secretary Kiran Gitte reinforced the role of the media as democracy’s fourth pillar, contributing significantly to national progress. The event saw contributions from National Press Club of India President Goutam Lahiri, who noted the challenges faced by traditional media. Also present were Information and Cultural Affairs Secretary P.K. Chakraborty, Agartala Press Club officials, and other notable figures, underscoring the media’s vital role in society.
