Transforming Northeast Agriculture: Join ICAR’s Inspiring National Meet to Achieve SDGs!
A national conference titled “Hill Agro-Ecosystem: Challenges and Opportunities for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals” started on Friday at the ICAR Nagaland Centre in Jharnapani, Medziphema. This two-day event, organized by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Research Complex for the North East Hill (NEH) Region, Nagaland Centre, and the Indian Association of Hill Farming, gathers 250 delegates, including scientists, researchers, educators, students, and farmers from across India. The conference is aimed at creating a roadmap for advancing agriculture in the hilly regions of the northeast.
Nagaland Governor La Ganesan, addressing the inaugural session as the chief guest, discussed the evolution and adoption of sustainable cropping patterns and resource management within the hill agro-ecosystem to fulfill local food and livelihood needs. He emphasized overcoming challenges in the hill farming sector by promoting region-specific crops, employing new technologies safely, and establishing adequate infrastructure for sustainable agricultural growth.
Governor Ganesan noted Nagaland’s potential to enhance marketable agricultural products, benefiting local communities while preserving the state’s biodiversity through its indigenous crops and farming techniques. Meanwhile, KM Bujarbaruah, a former ICAR New Delhi DDG and ex-VC of Assam Agriculture University, highlighted the need to tackle constraints such as management, marketing, mechanization, and environmental issues. He advocated for involving state governments in policy formulation to upgrade and expand the region’s agriculture sector and urged the adoption of heavy terracing and integrated farming practices for sustained growth. Bujarbaruah further remarked on the opportunity for the region to embrace an “evergreen revolution” in agriculture, compensating for missing out on the previous green revolution.
The conference is expected to offer insights and strategies to overcome these challenges, thereby enhancing the agricultural landscape of the northeastern hill regions.
