Heart-Wrenching Eyewitness Accounts: Shocking Jiribam Kidnapping Incident Amid Manipur Violence
On November 11, a tragic incident occurred in Jiribam, claiming the lives of six family members in a brutal attack by militants identified as “Kuki militants” by the state government. The violence erupted when the militants arrived in auto-rickshaws, opening fire indiscriminately and setting several houses, shops, and relief camps ablaze, leaving ten dead in the Borobekra area.
A 14-year-old boy recounted the harrowing event, stating he was at home with his mother when the militants struck. He hid as the attackers fired upon the house and described being forcibly dragged outside at gunpoint. Despite being assaulted, he managed to escape unscathed. His 12-year-old brother, meanwhile, hid in a paddy field with relatives, watching as their mother and other family members were taken away.
Among the deceased were several women and children, including the boys’ mother, Telem Thoibi Devi (31), their sister, two cousins, grandmother, and aunt. Post-mortem examinations revealed signs of extreme violence, including gunshot wounds, stab injuries, and blunt force trauma. The most distressing discovery was that of 10-month-old Laishram Langamba, found with severe injuries and signs of physical abuse.
The violence also claimed two elderly victims, Laishram Barel Singh (63) and Maibam Kesho Singh (71), who were burned alive in their homes. Autopsy reports revealed Kesho had inhaled smoke, indicating he was alive during the blaze.
In the wake of public outcry, the state government transferred this case, along with two others, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further investigation. The aftermath of this incident has left the community in shock as they deal with the profound loss and devastation.
