Unlocking Knowledge: Aaranyak’s Transformative GPS & GIS Workshop in Assam – Northeast News
Aaranyak’s Geospatial Technology and Application Division, in partnership with the GEF Small Grants Program (SGP) India and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), recently organized a three-day workshop on GPS and GIS technologies. Held from November 26-28 at the Extension Education Institute (NE Region), AAU in Khanapara, Guwahati, the event aimed at enhancing the capacity of representatives from Community-Based Organizations supported by SGP India.
The workshop was inaugurated by esteemed guests, including Dr. Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director of Social Transformation & Strategic Alliance at TERI, and Dr. Bibhuti Lahkar, Program Secretary of Aaranyak. The opening remarks emphasized the significance of GPS and GIS for precise data collection in the field.
The technical sessions kicked off with Arup Kumar Das from Aaranyak introducing map fundamentals. Subsequent lessons by GIS analysts Madhumita Borthakur, Avishek Sarkar, and Shivani Khalote covered GPS, open-source GIS software, and related applications. Participants engaged with GIS data preparation using Google Earth Pro.
On the second day, attendees participated in practical field data collection at Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, with guidance from Range Officer Parineeta Singh. The fieldwork concluded with data download and visualization using QGIS, Basecamp, and Google Earth Pro.
The workshop’s final day featured hands-on sessions focusing on GIS data preparation, basic editing, and map layout. The closing ceremony included speeches from Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, and Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, Secretary General & CEO of Aaranyak. The discussions underscored the importance of GPS and GIS tools in advancing nature-based solutions and conservation efforts. Dr. Rajumoni Bordoloi emphasized the crucial role of interdisciplinary approaches in conservation.
The event concluded with participants receiving certificates, signaling a successful knowledge-sharing initiative that promises to bolster community-driven conservation efforts.
