Transformative Change: Assam Govt’s Heartfelt Move to Appoint 9,000 Teachers & Waive Fees for BPL Students
Guwahati, Nov. 27: Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu announced several transformative schemes aimed at advancing the education sector in Assam. Addressing persistent challenges such as teacher shortages and access to quality education, these initiatives reflect a commitment to educational reform. A significant highlight is the recruitment of 9,000 new teachers with an emphasis on proficiency in local languages. Dr. Pegu emphasized that these positions would be permanent, alleviating staffing shortages and enhancing stability in schools.
To facilitate this recruitment, the Education Department will leverage the Shiksha Setu app for precise data on subject-specific shortages, enabling rapid and accurate appointments. Additionally, economically disadvantaged students will benefit from a waiver of admission fees. Targeted at BPL families, this financial relief will be available to students in Classes XI and XII at government and provincial schools starting the 2024 academic year. The initiative involves Rs. 18 crore in Direct Benefit Transfers, reaching over 250,000 students across 1,145 schools.
In a bid to bolster school administration and provide local employment, Grade IV positions will be outsourced with a preference for local candidates. Furthermore, the Education Department is developing educational videos to enhance learning. These teacher-assisted, subject-specific resources will be made available on YouTube, ensuring broader access to quality education.
Dr. Pegu’s announcements underscore an ambitious vision for education in Assam, focusing on long-term solutions and local empowerment.
